To my mind it's part and parcel of the "Grande Experiment" in representative governance. The experiment is underpinned by the principles enshrined in the Constitution... The framers attempted to leave monarchy and a belief in the notion of divine rule(authoritarianism)behind. Their solution, representative governance, is not a perfect solution but then there are no such solutions... Imperialism is brutal American or British or German or Israeli or Soviet(to name a few).
