Russia is increasingly deploying unidentified gas in its latest chemical warfare tactic against Ukrainian troops, who are losing ground across the hotspots of the eastern front line.

#Ukraine is currently unable to identify the majority of the gas used on the battlefield, compared to previous months when it could diagnose about half of the chemicals, according to Ukrainian Colonel Artem Vlasiuk.

Russian troops have used #chemical agents banned in #warfare as a psychological operation to sow panic among the Ukrainian forces, said Vlasiuk from the Support Forces’ Radiation, Chemical and #Biological Protection Command, a branch of the army responsible for inspecting chemical warfare.

In a survey conducted jointly with the polling firm Globescan, the Economist asked 30,000 people in 29 countries and one territory, Hong Kong, whether they would rather see #Russia or Ukraine win the war.

An average of 54% of those surveyed said they wanted a #Ukrainian win, compared to only 20% who supported Russia. More people supported Ukraine over Russia in 25 of the 30 countries or territories polled.

Was #Wagenknecht derzeit mit dem #BSW in #Thüringen inszeniert, ist gewissermaßen Geschichtsunterricht zum Mitmachen. Genau hundert Jahre nach Lenins Tod demonstriert sie live und in Farbe, wie der Aufbau und das Führen einer Kaderpartei aussehen – als wäre es ein Lehrfilm aus vergangenen Tagen. Man kann sich fast ein bisschen schämen, was einige einst respektable Köpfe der Linkspartei da abliefern, doch wie bei einem politischen Verkehrsunfall ist Wegschauen irgendwie keine Option. 🫣

It's quite logical. Humans are psychologically very prone to tribalism. We depend on and trust our extended families and our "tribe" of likeminded friends and associates, and that means we are strongly motivated to share beliefs. So if your friends and family see "Republican voter" or "MAGA member" as part of their core identity, they will engage in motivated reasoning to continue to support the beliefs that form part of that identity. To do otherwise risks friction with and ultimately being cast out of the group.

The reason people change their beliefs even at the very high cost of oppobrium from their former in-group and potentially breaking relationships with family members is that sometimes the group beliefs are too inconsistent with reality and/or too harmful to the individual to be sustained, and they are forced to make the difficult adjustment to accept alternate beliefs not sanctioned by their former group.

The trick for politicians is to try and collect together many hopefully somewhat compatible beliefs that they can then market as a group identity that is strongly appealing to a large group of voters. This is usually a somewhat organic process since politicans are mostly interested in whatever seems to be working for them in the moment, which is why parties can evolve in horriffic directions as they accumulate beliefs that appeal to people for harmful and divisive reasons.

This is an interesting news report from #CBC here in Canada. The Canadian reporter took a drive over the US border into upstate NY and talked to people in the streets of three small towns there.

You would think it was 100% Trump supporters, but a number of people were cagey or non-committal, which I think means they are voting for Harris but are afraid of retribution, especially if she does win. There were a couple of open Harris supporters, too. I think it is clear that many people are voting for Harris, but are afraid. What was surprising was one black Trump supporter, one Arab Trump supporter and some young women interviewed who think Trump is great. Most of these people are obviously not familiar with anything he has said or done or as @Teedi P. noted just brainwashed or as @Andrew Pam noted caught up in tribalism. Many of the Trump supporters obviously have believed the lies about Harris that Trump has been spouting, which is a concern. At least everyone was polite on camera.

The video is 6 minutes and well worth watching.
